“Understanding the Contexts Behind the Numbers”: The Research Journey of María Gómez

María Gómez is a general surgeon trained at Javeriana University and currently a Master’s student in Epidemiology. Born in Bogotá, she has found in qualitative research a way to expand the clinical outlook toward deeper dimensions of health and territory. Her work with the Indigenous Muisca community of Bosa has led her to question and enrich traditional knowledge models, learning to listen, observe, and understand from the cosmovision of those who inhabit and care for the territory.

Today, her work focuses on understanding how this community perceives disability, difference, and inclusion, exploring these topics through “circles of the word” and knowledge exchanges.

What graduate program are you studying, and what inspired you to pursue this field?

I am studying a Master’s in Epidemiology because I believe it is a powerful tool to generate real change, both in individuals and in public health. I’m interested in understanding the contexts behind the numbers.

What has been the biggest challenge in your training so far?

The biggest challenge has been understanding forms of knowledge that differ from academic ones. When working with the Indigenous Muisca community of Bosa, it was initially difficult to understand their dynamics, structure, and beliefs. I had to learn to listen and to build trust.

What key skill have you gained during this time?

I’ve learned to integrate my clinical knowledge with a community-centered approach.

What is the topic of your thesis or degree project?

My research seeks to understand perceptions of disability within the Muisca community of Bosa. Through “circles of the word” and knowledge exchanges, we explore how they understand difference, inclusion, and health from their own cosmovision.

Where do you see yourself in five years with your research?

I imagine myself researching in qualitative fields that help me better understand my patients.
